I bet you have not read this anywhere!
The moment it occurred to me, I decided to write it down…and it was a very casual reply to what my friend was telling me about life and living. So, she said, “..and therefore, we should be grateful for the little things in life.”
We all have heard about this a million times, and it is the most common way we tell someone why they should be appreciating what they have instead of being unhappy about what they don’t have.
So, even if you say it in a positive way, the word ‘little’ has a negative connotation to it. We understand that it’s little but then we’re not completely devoid of happiness, wealth, kids, comfort, or whatever the context.
It means that it is the opposite of the big thing, the thing which brings fame, luxuries, popularity, and success! It means the little things are not valuable enough, but then we should be content with the little things even though we may not have the big things. It is always said with a degree of resignation, and always accepted with some discomfort lingering at the back of the mind. It is never a statement of complete happiness or contentment. It is more about what we have to forego; it tells us that what we have is ‘little’.
And what are those little things? Maybe, a walk in the woods, by a quiet beach, a simple dinner with your small family, enjoying a movie with your spouse, dabbling in a new activity, meeting friends over the weekend, traveling solo to a nearby city, cooking a new dish, reading, playing with kids, pampering yourself at the parlor once in a while, or just trying out a new lipstick! And why are these called little? Because, there is nothing shiny or glamorous about it?
So the moment I thought about it this way, I was surprised. Because, if you think about it, these are not ‘little’ things. These things are the greatest things that you will ever experience in your life. These are things that kindle a variety of emotions in you, and make your life ‘human’. These are also the things that develop your confidence, character, courage, strength, your entire personality! Just think about learning a new hobby…painting. It is a very meditative experience. It releases stress, boosts emotional development, fosters creativity, and also strengthens memory! How can this be a little thing? This ‘little’ activity is changing your life and personality in ways you cannot even imagine. (Do you know what ‘great’ things can be accomplished when your brain is strengthened?)
What I want to say is that nothing that you do in life is ‘little’. These ‘little’ activities are building up your unique personality; you should be proud of doing anything at all in life. The words little and big mean nothing at all; all these are events that you experience and they give your life a unique flavor, that is known by your name!
So, I’m flavor Saniya!.. and go do something right away..!
